Tasmania to become newest addition to IRONMAN 70.3 Oceania calendar

IRONMAN has announced that Tasmania will become the newest addition to the IRONMAN 70.3 Oceania calendar with a five-year agreement, running through 2027.

The inaugural IRONMAN® 70.3® Tasmania triathlon is set to be held on Sunday 5th February 2023, with Australian and International athletes heading to Hobart to take on a spectacular and challenging course in and around the state’s historic capital.

Tasmania features breathtakingly wild landscapes, untamed and seemingly purpose-built for adventure offering opportunities to reconnect with nature. Visitors will also be treated to local art and hospitality experiences.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania triathlon will offer a 1.9km swim course in the Derwent River that hugs the historic Battery Point before embarking on a 90km ride with the most vertical gain of any IRONMAN 70.3 bike course in Oceania. The 21.1km run will allow athletes to enjoy some of the best scenery in and around Hobart, with the world-famous IRONMAN 70.3 finish line to be alongside Princes Wharf.

IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will also see some of the world’s best triathletes alongside more than 1,000 athletes, with the event to feature a male and female professional race.

Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Oceania for The IRONMAN Group, said that the organisation was excited to bring IRONMAN 70.3 racing to Tasmania.

Meyer notes “we can’t wait to see athletes hit the start line in Hobart next February for the first ever IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania. Our team has been working hard to develop a course that will show off the region and provide an incredible racing experience for the more than 1,000 athletes who will take part.

“Tasmania is a bucket list destination for people from around the world and we’re thrilled to be in the position to show off the region to triathletes, their friends and families, as they come to race, stay and play.

“IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will be a unique event in our portfolio, it will include the first indoor transition in the region at Princes Wharf and is also set to be the southernmost IRONMAN 70.3 event in the world. A unique destination demands a unique course and that’s what this event will deliver.”

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the event would deliver around $2 million in economic benefits to Tasmania every year of the five-year agreement.

“This is fantastic news for Tasmanian sporting fans that will add to the state’s growing reputation for delivering elite sporting content,” the Premier said.

“With more than 170 IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlons worldwide, this will put our State on the map and once again showcase our stunning natural locations to the world.

“Local tourism and hospitality businesses will reap the benefits, with more than 1000 competitors and their supporters coming to Tasmania and eating and shopping in local businesses, and staying at local hotels.”

IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania.
