Shanghai Disneyland has commenced a new 2.46 billion yuan (US$338 million) expansion project, anchored by an outdoor scenic area and ancillary service facilities, as well as landscape enhancements.

According to details revealed by the Shanghai Construction Trading Center and reported by the China Daily, the new project will occupy a plot of around 2 hectares in Chuansha New Town of Pudong New Area.

Previous advice from Shanghai Disney Resort indicated that the new project will neighbour the recently unveiled Zootopia-themed land.

Since its opening in June 2016, the Shanghai Disney Resort has experienced multiple expansions. In April 2018, the Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land was launched, followed by the debut of the Zootopia-themed land in December 2023.

In addition, as of last August construction commenced on the resort's third Disney-themed hotel while Shanghai Disney Resort has also opened the public bidding process for its next expansion, expected to be one of its biggest to date.

Official figures reveal that Shanghai Disneyland welcomed a record 13 million visitors throughout 2023. The entire Shanghai International Tourism Resort, including the Shanghai Disney Resort and the outlet mall Bicester Village, played host to 25.627 million visitors over the course of the year.

Globally, Disney Resorts has announced that it will invest US$60 billion in its theme parks and cruise ships over the next decade.
