Singapore Marathon 2022 features mass start and road race format

Singapore Marathon 2022 features mass start and road race format
December 3, 2022

With restrictions being lifted in Singapore, this year’s Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) has returned to a full format including more runners, as well as feature a mass start and road race format.

Close to 15,000 runners in the 5km and 10km categories were flagged off from the F1 Pit Building at the break of dawn. Runners raced through the streets of Singapore as they made their way to the finish line at The Float @ Marina Bay.

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin participated in the 5km category, running alongside youths from SportCares, an organisation which actively reach out to youth at-risk in the community and engaging them through sports. With inclusivity being key at SCSM, the event also saw runners from special groups such as the Special Olympics Singapore, SUN-DAC, and the Specialme.MY Run Club, which race organisers IRONMAN Group had offered complimentary race slots to their runners.

Marcus Tan, Chief of Sport Development Group, Sport Singapore shared “SCSM 2022 is an exceptionally special one as the event returns in full swing since 2019. Participants from SportCares have always shown strong support for the event and this year we have our largest group of 650 participants. This morning, Speaker of Parliament, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, and I ran together with the SportCares participants and many were excited to have the opportunity to be part of this marquee event and pound the roads together with their friends.”

This year, the Special Olympics Singapore (SOSG) is sending a contingent of athletes to compete at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 and has used SCSM2022 as an important milestone towards their preparation for the Games.

Executive Director of SOSG Vinnce Wu notes “running at SCSM has allowed our athletes to mark their improvements as important step in their running journey with SOSG. It was heartening to see all of them giving their all while having fun at the same time. We would like to thank the IRONMAN Group for providing our runners the opportunity to be part of this great event and hope to be back in the next edition.”

Matilda Sng, a runner from the Xtrailblazers Running Club who recently resumed running after giving birth to her third child added “SCSM races have always been friendly to returning runners especially with ample water points and appropriate pen categorisation! This is my third 10km race ever since I got back into running postpartum and it is a personal best in terms of pace and distance for me. Running with my fellow club mates from also accelerated my progress and prepared me for this race – it feels great to be back in a mass running event again after so long!”

Nearly 40,000 runners are expected this weekend with 5,000 international participants flying in for the marquee running event. The event continues tomorrow with the Marathon 42.195km and the Half Marathon 21.1km categories. The flag off for both categories commences at 4.30am.

The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon is the leading mass participation run and only World Athletics Label race in South East Asia. Since 2002, the race has brought runners unparalleled running experiences, threading through the heart of the city seeing iconic heritage buildings and against one of the world's most iconic city skylines and past some of Singapore’s iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. Comprising six categories; Marathon, Half Marathon, Ekiden Relay, 10km and Kids Dash, the race has been a catalyst to growing the local and regional running community, by bringing together approximately 50,000 professional, amateur, avid and leisure runners yearly.
