December 22, 2020

High profile professional lifeguard and Waverley Council’s Head Lifeguard at Sydney’s Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte beaches, Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins has been recognised for delivering one of the most influential presentations at the Virtual World Leader Summit last week.

Out of more than 120 presenters and with in excess of 90 counties tuning in to the virtual event, jury members vote on the most influential presentations.

Hopkins also received the US Presidential Service Centre Award on behalf of Surf Educators International, receiving the award online in front of a global viewing audience.

Commenting on the recognition, Hopkins advised “I have had so many people contact me from around the world after doing this presentation.

“This is our time to be on the front foot and take Float to Survive to the world.

“We will not get a better chance than this.”

Float to Survive
The Float to Survive advice advocated by Surf Educators International and Surf Educators Australia is for ‘Float, Relax and Save Your Life’ when caught in a rip.

It advises “a rip is a current that flows away from the beach, mostly in a circular motion within the surf break” and that “to survive - stop swimming, stop fighting the rip (and) float with the rip toward the waves.”
