Hygiene Express highlights the importance of Gym Cleanliness
May 4, 2022

Hygiene Express, a leading washroom hygiene services provider based in NSW, is spotlighting the importance of maintaining a clean environment in fitness centres.

Whenever people come to your gym to practice and keep their bodies healthy, they expect you to take proper measures in providing the overall cleanliness of the centre. And when you don't meet their expectations and needs, they surely will lose their trust and not return.

To preserve everyone's health and wellbeing, it's more important than ever to keep your gym clean and sanitary.

Prevent germs
The gym is a relatively damp environment since the sweat of visitors creates moisture which is the perfect place for bacteria, germs, and viruses to thrive. So, to prevent the spread of germs, you need to take measures in cleaning your gym. Common germs that you can encounter in gyms are dermatophytosis, staphylococcus saprophyticus, salmonella, staphylococcus aureus, rhinoviruses, influenza, etc. It turns out that the free weight, exercise bike, and average treadmill all have more than one million germs per square inch.

As a result, gyms must maintain a high level of cleanliness to protect their employees’ and customers’ health. To tackle the bacteria typically found in gyms and fitness centres, you'll need the appropriate hygiene products, solutions, or services.

Maintain Professionalism
Imagine what your customers will think of your business if they get sick after visiting your gym. They will not think of you as a professional and reputable centre where every care and effort is taken to maintain your employee’s and customers’ health. You will not be able to build relationships, establish credibility and trust, and have loyal customers with poor hygiene habits.

Your business image is protected with a clean gym and people will be more inclined to return to your fitness centre when it’s hygienic. When a potential customer enters your gym, the first thing they'll notice is the cleanliness and the facilities. The first impression is essential in maintaining your professionalism and building a reputation. A clean gym will help to improve your business image and inspire people to come back to use your services.

Protect Equipment Condition
You may not have the budget to invest in new equipment every single time. If you don't maintain the cleanliness of your gym, a lot of modern equipment might become rusty and your gym will appear old. Cleaning equipment not only makes things look new but also extends their life by preventing rust and dust. In the long run, this will save you a lot of money.

This regular cleaning process is less expensive than purchasing new equipment.

Improve Air Quality
There are two major reasons for poor air quality in gyms — people and inadequate ventilation.

You can eliminate unwanted odours and provide your visitors with a healthy environment by using proper air conditioning and gym ventilation. Your customers come to you to enhance or maintain their health through exercise. They will not ignore poor indoor air quality that puts their health in danger because they are health-conscious people. Don't turn away clients because of a lack of gym ventilation as proper indoor air quality is a part of gym cleanliness.

Hygiene Tips For Gym Owners and Custodians
Here are a handful of hygiene tips for you and your cleaning staff:

  • Have a cleaning schedule and ask your custodians to stick to it. The hourly cleaning duties may include cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, disinfecting and sanitizing equipment, cleaning locker rooms, providing towels and sufficient levels of soap dispensers and paper towels, checking for rubbish, and more.
  • Educate your employees, especially custodians about the importance of gym cleanliness. Ask them to clean, disinfect, and sanitize equipment properly by using disinfectant wipes, anti-bacterial cleaners, and spray bottles. Your custodians should have high-powered cleaners on hand to clean your equipment thoroughly at least once a day. However, you must ensure that your cleaning materials do not pose a health risk to your employees. Ask your cleaning staff wear protective clothing, including masks, gloves, etc.
  • Signs and posters should be used to encourage your users and employees to wash their hands.
  • Your custodians should clean frequently-touched areas with disinfectant wipes, sanitisers, and cleaning solutions. The top high-touch surfaces include door handles, toilet flushes, faucets, hand weights, weight changing levers, floor mats, showers, lockers, tool buttons and handles, etc.
  • Put disinfectant wipes and hand sanitisers near each piece of equipment and next to the entrance and in locker rooms.
  • In your daily cleaning schedule, pay special attention to the showers and locker rooms. Steam generates a moist atmosphere where germs, mould, and bacteria thrive. Install a ventilation or dehumidification system to dissipate steam and keep the air somewhat dry.
  • Ask custodians clean floors and carpets by using high-filtration vacuum cleaners.
  • If you want to increase the quality of the air in your gym you should install humidifiers and ventilators. Open windows or adjust the air conditioning in common areas to allow more airflow.

Hygiene Tips For Gym Visitors

  • Wash hands properly before entering the exercising area.
  • Use hand sanitisers before and after using gym equipment.
  • Wear shower shoes when taking a shower to prevent Athletes' foot and other fungal illnesses.
  • Wash gym clothes regularly after your workout.
  • Take a shower after your workout to get rid of the sweat and bacteria.
  • Have your own bottle of water, towels, and mats.
