FINA strips Russian city of Kazan of 25-metre World Swimming Championships

FINA strips Russian city of Kazan of 25-metre World Swimming Championships
March 25, 2022

Russia’s further isolation from the international sporting world following its invasion of Ukraine has seen world swimming governing body FINA strip the city of Kazan of its hosting rights for this year’s World Swimming Championships (25m).

FINA taking the event, which had been due to take place from 17th to 22nd December, away from Kazan follows it having last month stripped the city of its hosting of August’s World Junior Championships.

FINA said it is currently in discussions with potential hosts to take over the event.

This week has also seen Russian and Belarusian athletes banned from competing at the FINA World Championships in Hungary from 18th June to 3rd July.

As a result, Russia has announced its withdrawal from all other FINA events for the remainder of the year.

Kazan is currently also scheduled to host the 2025 edition of the World Aquatics Championships.
