Car maker Toyota reveals plan for new basketball arena in Tokyo
September 5, 2022

Toyota has announced plans to build a 10,000 capacity basketball arena on the site of one of its former car showrooms in Tokyo.

The next-generation arena is planned to open in Aomi in Tokyo's Odaiba area in autumn 2025 to be the home venue for Toyota Alvark Tokyo, a member of the B. League First Division.

The venue will also stage indoor sports such as volleyball and table tennis, urban sports, para sports, esports, and be used more to widely share the appeal of sports.

The facility will have two outdoor parks to contribute to community vitality, and in addition to efforts at reducing arena waste generation, Toyota is exploring LEED certification - afirst for any Japanese arena.

Introducing the venue, Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota and Chairman of Toyota Fudosan, advised “this arena will become the new home of Alvark Tokyo, Toyota's basketball team, but we hope it will also become sacred ground for all kinds of other competitions. We hope that it will also provide power to parasports and competitions with a low number of competitors, low recognition, and few supporters.

“I am confident that when people can see, first-hand and close-up, competition with athletes they have never seen before, seeking to set new records never before achieved by humankind and opening up new potentialities, and actually succeeding in that, many people - including us - will feel encouragement and joy.”

The development continues the practice of Japan’s major corporations owning major venues and sporting teams.

Toyota is looking for partners who will support the project for the opening of the arena.
